Children’s Perception of Parental Physical Abuse:
A Rights-based Case Study in Nanjing, China
Physical abuse, as well as other forms of child abuse, has become a serious social problem. However, this issue is understudied in mainland China. From a child-centred and children’s rights perspective, this study tries to explore how children themselves perceive and interpret their experiences of parental physical abuse. It was found that children tend to regard parental physical abuse as legitimate, as arising out of the purpose of administering discipline. Such a perception is deeply influenced by Chinese traditional culture. However, the children also stated that parental physical abuse has negative effects, not only harming their bodies, but also affecting the positive image they have of their parents, and even destroying the parent-child relationship. This study concludes by outlining some prospects for developing future policies on the prevention of child abuse in mainland China.
