Double Marginalization:Migrant Workers in China through the Lens of Gender
This article constructs an analytical framework based on the social construction of gender. It provides one perspective and four related dimensions, namely, gender differences, gender norms, the gender division of labour, and gender identities. This framework is then used to review empirical studies on rural to urban migration in China. Our review showed systematic gender differences in the socio-demographic profiles of migrants, their migration patterns, and their labour market positions that are disadvantageous to women. It also revealed a lack of research in the following three areas: (1) how the gender division of labour in the labour market and in the labour process has shaped horizontal and vertical gender segregation, gender differences in income, and opportunities for upward mobility; (2) how the process of migration has challenged the traditional gender order and the gender identities of migrants; and (3) how the four dimensions of gender have interacted and reproduced an unequal gender order and maintained the hegemonic position of male dominance in society.
