The Political Attitudes of Hong Kong Immigrants in Taiwan
This research presents the lived experiences and views of Hong Kongers towards recent political developments in Hong Kong and Taiwan in relation to Mainland China. In-depth interviews were conducted with 24 Hong Kongers between the ages of 40 and 75 who had settled in Taiwan between 1966 and 2002.
They reported that their main reason for migrating to Taiwan was related to the political situation in Taiwan and Hong Kong during the Cold War period. Some of them had benefited from government policies on recruiting overseas Chinese students, engaged in a variety of white-collar professional jobs, and integrated successfully as “privileged migrants”. Although anti-Communist feelings were implied in their responses, the majority expressed views different from the anti-China sentiments heard in the Sunflower Student Movement in Taiwan and the Occupy Central Movement in Hong Kong. Most of the respondents expressed concern over recent socio-political changes in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
