Congratulations to Prof. Fanny M. Cheung on Being Conferred an Honorary Doctorate

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Fanny M. Cheung, HKIAPS Honorary Senior Research Fellow, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong in recognition of her outstanding contributions to promote gender equality in Asia.

 

Professor Cheung has been a champion for gender equality and women’s empowerment. She founded the first Gender Research Centre in Hong Kong and Greater China, followed by the establishment of Gender Studies Programme at CUHK. She was the Founding Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission in Hong Kong where she led the Commission in conducting or commissioning a series of crucial baseline surveys and initiated policies against sexual harassment in tertiary education institutions in Hong Kong and mainland China, and instituted gender mainstreaming training in the public sector.

 

Beyond her academic achievements, Professor Cheung had a profound impact on policies promoting fairness and inclusivity. She worked with work with the United Nations’ Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and served as HKSAR Advisory Committee on Eliminating Discrimination against Sexual Minorities. She has led the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association for decades, promoting holistic mental health to the public.

 

A dedicated mentor and educator, Professor Cheung has inspired countless students and professionals, fostering a new generation of scholars and change-makers. Her commitment to excellence, integrity, and compassion continues to leave an indelible mark on the academic community and society at large.
